A moving Remembrance Service was held this afternoon on the pitch of Chatham Town FC. This annual act of remembrance was begun by our great community-minded club some ten years ago, and this year was held for the first time on Armistice Day itself.
The service was conducted by one of my mayoral chaplains – Rev Luke Bacon from St John's Chatham – and we stood in silence following the Last Post, played by a lone bugler from the stands, the acoustics perfectly accentuating its haunting notes. Alongside owner and manager Kevin Hake, veterans Kev Rourke and Peter Cass, I had the honour to lay a wreath on behalf of the borough in honour of those who gave their lives in that most dreadful of wars and the many conflicts since.
With club staff, veterans, supporters, local councillors and a large contingent of young players from the burgeoning Chats Academy forming a guard, we remembered together.
